Dr. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan is an Indian born American, who is physicist by training and biologist by inclination. He graduated with a physics degree in 1971 from MS University, Baroda, has a PG in Chemistry from Yale University and Ph.D in Physics from Ohio University in 1976. He spent two years studying biology as a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego. He is a real example of inter-disciplinarity in science and shared the noble prize in chemistry in 2009 with Thomas A Steitz and Ada Yonath for “Studies of the structure and function of Ribosome” and elucidating how cells make protein.

His lecture on “How antibiotics block the ribosome, the cell’s protein factory” as part of Oak Ridge Distinguished Lecture Series in Science, Technology and Policy on July 28, 2015 has been shared by my colleague Dr. Shailja Gupta at DBT. There is no doubt in my mind that all UG, PG, Ph.D and post doc students, teachers and researchers in life sciences should listen to his inspiring lecture and get benefited. Indeed, we are very proud of him as a fellow Indian who made the country proud by his contributions and this is my way of saluting him on the Independence Day. Happy Independence Day!

Masterclass by Dr. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan should be shown compulsorily to all science students especially UGs level   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZiaTEpxa0g&feature=youtu.beScreen Shot 2015-08-12 at 8.47.29 PM
